Committee for Human Rights in B&H from Helsinki

Sarajevo, 07 August, 1997(AIM)- "More than a million of citizens of B&H who are denied their right to live in their homeland and their own homes paid the highest price during this cruel war, other than those who paid the ultimate price - lost their lives", announces the statement of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in B&H, and further states: Any obstruction or inhibition of the process by which these homeless people would realize their rights as well as renewed expatriation from the burnt remains of their property which some returnees even had to pay with their lives of physical violence, as evidenced even now -two years after the Dayton Accord, is one of the most obvious and picturesque indications of the politics of the oligarchic authorities. These authorities are aware that their only chance for survival is violent separation of three ethnically homogenized regions. Success of this politics would be tragical outcome for B&H. The failure of the Peace Accord in the very part which refers to return of refugees clearly shows intentions and politics of the central state authorities and the parties in power. The constant incidents and violence can only be explained by their silent approval and encouragement. Simultaneous occurrence of the current incidents, together with the time frame of their happening, inevitably pose a question if these manipulations have already gone too far, with respect to the misfortuned populace, particularly given that the pre-election campaign is to start. The subordinate function of the media , with respect to behavior of the parties in power, should also be emphasized, since those who report and condemn this behavior are in minority. And even then, their one- sidedness and attempting to justify the behavior is obvious, i.e.they
minimize the responsibility for the incidents which happened in the region under the control of the authorities they support.(end)
